Fixed: 504 Gateway Timeout Because Apparently Canada’s Biggest ISP Refuses To Talk To The WordPress Server

UPDATED 21:55 Mar 07 01:27 Mar 08

So… HOLY CRAP I can SEE. Whatever button someone pushed, please keep up the good work… I have a Blue Bar, I can see WordPress pages, and I think I’m surfing faster than ever… and no more 504 Pages… HOLY YAY. I’m going to do a post on Panic so I’ll keep this up for now as reference… there were emails to and from six WP bloggers, an email to and from WP support, then I got help from my ISP, used other computers, then there was this original post, I got into the Forums finally, updated this post, a couple more emails… and now this. It’s interesting having a timeline available to a mini-panic attack…

.

The First Post… can you feel the panic?

I’m having some frustrating computer problems right now… it seems to have started when a scheduled JAVA download happened a couple of days ago because since then logging into WordPress has been impossible, and even loading random WordPress blogs has been impossible.

When I’d try to load a blog, like cinemagypsy.wordpress.com, or get into my own blog all I’d get is a page saying “504 Gateway Timeout The following error occurred: A gateway timeout occurred. The server is unreachable. Retry the request. Could not open error file”

But it was only WordPress pages… everything else was / is fine.

I contacted WP Support and they thought it was an ISP problem, and when I contacted my ISP they thought it was something wrong with my computer.

They had me fiddle around in the System Configuration menu and now I can see WordPress blogs and I can even login to my own account (thank God). I still can’t get into the Forum or the FAQ pages, and the little blue bar doesn’t appear while I’m logged in… and I’m still having problems getting around in the Admin area.

As a result I’m going to bring my computer to the Cleaners just to see if it was the JAVA thing or if there’s something else going on… so I’ll be offline for a few days playing Max Payne straight from the beginning… .

My thanks to everyone who responded to my Help email…

.

The First Update… frustration, and acceptance.

*I just managed to FINALLY get into the WP Forums (it still looks like an old school HTML site to me) and found a thread about Bell Canada and 504’s started a week ago. So other people Are having the same problem.

But WP has no solutions… they’re asking Us to call Bell Canada to complain, this is from one of the Official WP People (Barry):

“Based on the traceroutes we have received from various users and the information we have received from our upstream provider, Bell Cananda is routing traffic destined to one of our IP blocks in a loop. The traffic is not being correctly routed out of the Bell network. This is likely a simple configuration error on their end and may or may not affect their routing of traffic to other IP blocks/websites. Our upstream provider has contacted their Network Operations Center and informed them of the problem, but as Bell Canada customers, it would also probably be helpful if you contact them as well. Unfortunately, since the configuration error is not within our network, there is nothing we can do to fix the problem. As a temporary workaround, I have routed the majority of blog traffic around the problem area for the time being.”

So I have no idea what happens now… I think I’ll wait until Monday to drop the computer off at The Shop. This is starting to feel like one of those things which basically sorts itself out… but the more emails to Bell the better.

Any help, suggestions or just notes letting me know I’m not the only functionally technologically retarded surfer on the Net are appreciated.

I have the same problems with loading my page. I changed the number of posts to be displayed down to 2, and it helped a bit. I think wordpress is having bandwidth problems.

I can login, but the blue Admin bar at the top is missing when I’m looking at my page, or any other WordPress page. But the space for it is there between the blog title and the Tabs… and I’m still getting 504 Gateway Timeout messages when I try to get into the Forums.

I can go anywhere else on the Net with No problem, including anywhere on WordPress.org.

I still get 504 messages occasionally from jumping around in my Dashboard, but I just hit Reload and the page comes will eventually together. The few times I can get into the Forum it looks like an old school HTML page.

It’s almost like if I keep hitting refresh eventually I’ll get the page to load, but it looks like an HTML page.

I got a response from WP Support asking me to check with my ISP, the ISP says maybe it’s the computer so I’ll have it checked out but… the only site effected is WordPress.com (not .org) and it’s really hit and miss…

Anyway… I’ve got 2L of Diet Caffeine Free Pepsi, enough ground beef for five hamburgers and both Max Payne and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne so I should be good for the weekend.

If this thing is still going on after Monday I’ll “consider my options”.

  4. Kana Kumai says:

I think I found a reason why this happened… if you look at wordpress.com stats in the past week or two, there’s been a significant jump of users making new wordpress accounts. It looks more like spambots attacked their registration which could’ve also affected the server’s performance.

    http://wordpress.com/stats/signups/
If you look at the stats, the amount of users unusually skyrocketed in the past week or two… Could be that wordpress was attacked during that time and could’ve also affected the server’s performance.

  7. Gabriel... says:

Yeah… but which ISP are you on?

  8. OMG. Just trying to get through the FAQ (FUQ) pages gave me a headache. And I am certainly not technologically inclined.

I have spoken to people re: “The Big Two” ISPs and they’ll bitch about both but by far, Bell seems to get the worst in my opinion. Needless to say, I am on the other.

I don’t understand why this is happening.

Maybe Kana Kumai has a point but I mentioned to you that there was that funky weirdness where I lost my Referrers for yesterday. And yet, maintained my stats. However, I had no problems with anything else…unless I wasn’t in the target, bullshit period. Nonetheless, it sounds like it’s been going on for a long time for certain (Bell) users?

I’m going to shoot you back that email discuss. we had…

  9. Gabriel... says:

Two different issues, I think. Or maybe one caused the other. Between the Forums and the emails I’ve received it seems much more likely it’s Bell, not WP, who has the solution. It’s frustrating like crazy… I’m going to wait, and play Max Payne, until Monday. Then if things still blow chunks I’ll start looking for a new ISP… dammit, Freaking Bell has just sorted out their Online Customer Service so now it actually works. This sucks moose balls.

I’ll have to email Mark, WP’s support dude, and let him know he was right.

  10. Kitty says:

Wow, I lost all of my search terms for one day but my stats were the same.

I saw something about some spambots causing some problems at wordpress. I hope this gets sorted soon.

  11. Gabriel... says:

If you check the WP Forums (an awesome place full of flowers, teddy bears and free beer) there’s a few different threads about the Stats problem and the Other Stuff… including a thread on the Bell Canada problem. It seems to be a Perfect Storm of attacks, oddities and weirdness over at WP during the past week… and HOLY CRAP the Forum just opened for me in all its Glory. I think / hope this is all fixed.

Oh great! Thanks so much for the heads up! Nice meeting you too!

By the way, its just bad that Bell Canada has to be pulling some trick on us wordpress users. Anyways, thanks again for the heads up!

  14. Oh, shit. I am laughing so hard about your comment about the fora…flowers, teddy bears and free beer!

You know, I guess I don’t hang out there enough as no one’s offered me any of that stuff!

I’m glad you got everything fixed. Could you imagine if that happened to me for an extended period with Blog365? Well, it wouldn’t be bad as I’d have work during the week.

Lord, on the weekends, I’d have to go the hardcopy route and backdate. I’d just totally slack off and write one word for those days.

  15. HAHAHA! Now I’m REALLY laughing because either you’re moderating or I can’t leave a comment!

Okay…if you don’t have comment moderation on, it’s not funny.

Oh…and this isn’t exactly funny either. Earlier today it took me forever to spam a comment.

Come on WP…unless now my ISP has gone into the shitter!

  16. Okay, it’s all good. There I am!

  17. Isabel says:

Nice to see you posting again!
